Homemade Soap vs. Store-Bought Soap: What’s the Difference?

As someone who has used store-bought soap since the day your parents first brought you home from the hospital, you’re probably wondering why you should consider using homemade soap in its place. While it seems logical that we’re a little prejudiced, we humbly submit that our tendency to favor our deliciously gorgeous UR Bath and Body homemade soaps is well justified!

If given a choice, go with homemade soap!

There are a number of reasons why homemade soap is preferable to store-bought soap.

  1. Homemade soap is REAL soap. That may seem like an innocuous difference, but the reality is, store-bought soap isn’t real soap at all. That’s why what passes for soap in the store has a multitude of different names, like “deodorant bar,” “body wash,” and “intimate wash.” None of these indicate that they are real soap, and in fact, a quick glance at their ingredients lists sodium laurel sulfate (SLS) or its cousin sodium laureth sulfate (SDS) as its primary cleansing agent. Though it has cleaning and emulsifying properties that behave similarly to soap, it is not soap. Homemade soap, on the other hand, is truly soap, and it’s free of harsh chemicals like SLS or SDS.
  2. Homemade soap is made with REAL ingredients. Further along the lines of the benefits, it is made with natural, sometimes organic, ingredients that are rich in vitamins and antioxidants that moisturize and replenish the skin. And unlike store-bought soap, which can dry out and irritate the skin, it can help alleviate the symptoms of skin reactions like rashes, eczema, and acne. Best of all, homemade soap contains glycerin, a naturally occurring by-product of the soap-making process (for ease, a genuine homemade soap is made by combining a fatty product with an alkaline product, yielding soap and glycerol), which is essential for maintaining your skin’s natural moisture balance.
  3. Homemade soap is FAIR. If you’re one that’s concerned about the conditions of your fellow humans and animals, know that it is made under fair trade conditions (that is, all the humans involved in the process were treated with dignity and paid fairly) and not tested on animals. Can your store-bought soap say the same?
